Magic is an art form, comprised of specific techniques that once combined with showmanship and a little mystery can result in grand illusions that will amaze your audience.

The world of magic can appear quite daunting at times, but with a little guidance and instruction you’ll find that taking the time to practice and perfect the techniques shown will result in the fulfilling reward of being able to truly amaze people.
 
There are many aspects to magic, areas of specialisation which you may choose to pursue. As a guide we have listed some of the different areas of magic and given a general description of the type of magic to expect within them.

Generally we recommend starting with card magic (a great DVD to begin with is “How to do Street Magic”). You’ll learn some of the basic concept and techniques involved with sleight of hand, card manipulation and card control, put together to create some classic card tricks.

Card Magic
It’s all about making the impossible happen with cards. You’ll learn sleight of hand techniques, how people cheat at cards and other methods used by magicians and professional card players to control cards to the nth degree. If you want to make cards disappear, have them appear in strange places and generally shock people then this is one of the genres of magic you will truly enjoy.

Coin Magic
Instantly vanish a coin off the back of a spectator’s hand without them feeling a thing. Bite a quarter in half and instantly restore it. Slam a coin into a sealed soda can. Coin magic makes use of one of the most common and memorable props on Earth: cold hard cash. With the spare change in your pocket, you are ready to unleash pure astonishment.

Mentalism
Read minds. Move objects with the power of thought. Predict the future and divine the past. Mentalism pierces to the very core of humanity… the mind. With the right performing style and presentation, psychic effects can be some of the most powerful magic that you will ever perform.

Levitation
Leave the ground behind and rise off the face of the Earth. Cause the objects around you to loosen their ties with the ground and gently float into the air. Defy the very laws gravity.

Bizarre Magic
Utilizing the power of suggestion and presentational angles, bizarre magic is a genre of magic unto itself. While there are many definitions of what bizarre magic is, we feel that “bizarre magic” is magic that is presented with a strange story, utilizes a bizarre prop (such as an amulet or statue), or is a strange effect in itself, such as writing appearing in blood on your arm, bending metal with your mind, or controlling the power of electricity.

Card Manipulation
Card manipulation is a beautiful art form that involves a great degree of skill and passion to become successful. Learn how to perform some of the most stunning displays of skill that you have ever seen with a pack of cards. Produce beautiful card fans, cut a deck and shuffle it with one hand, produce cards from your empty hands and learn the most incredible cut combinations on Earth. One of the more technically difficult branches of entertainment with cards, manipulation can be highly rewarding and interesting to pursue.

Magic in General
In the end, the path to achievement in magic is not always clear. Perhaps you still do not know which direction to go. From this standpoint, your journey begins by sampling pieces of different magical arts. During your study, you will learn your strengths and weaknesses and will develop stronger feelings towards certain genres than others. This process of learning a variety of magic effects will usually give you a good idea of which path you want to follow. From there, you may decide to stay as a “jack of all trades”, or travel down a more specific channel based on your personality and personal preference.
